Abstract: This report is a review of the author's year of experience as an intern with The Andersons in Maumee, Ohio...The author's prime responsibility was in the area of energy management for the company. An energy audit of The Andersons' Maumee complex was performed to determine amounts of energy used and how it was used. A recommendations report for a company-wide energy management program was presented to management. The intent of this recommendations report was to develop a company energy policy, determine required manpower and structure for a proposed energy department within the company, and develop a company-wide energy conservation program. In addition, coordination and management of several energy conservation projects was undertaken. Engineering projects other than energy management were performed. These involved work associated with a survey of waste materials to insure compliance with federal regulations on hazardous wastes; a study of the grain aeration system at the Champaign elevator to evaluate a possible redesign; and engineering analyses of country elevators being evaluated for lease under the company's Linkage Program. These projects required a close working relationship with engineering, environmenetal protection, maintenance, purchasing and accounting departments, as well as with operations personnel. Thus, this internship position at The Andersons provided exposure to a various segments of the company. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering problem areas provided a valuable educational experience.

Andersen, Donald A. (Texas A&M University, May 1982)[more][less]
Abstract: This report discusses the author's engineering experience at the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), Texas A&M University from March 1974 through July 1977. A report of this experience plus twelve additional hours of academic course work were substituted for an internship according to requirements established by the College of Engineering. Although the author could not retroactively establish objectives of the type associated with a typical internship, the work experience gained could be related to the two general objectives of an intership: 1. To demonstrate an identifiable contribution to the organization in which the intern served, and 2. To enable the intern to become aware of the non-technical aspects of working as an engineer in a non-academic environment. While a member of the Texas Transportation Institute staff, the author worked on a number of projects in the areas of highway traffic engineering research and the preparation of continuing education courses for transportation engineering officials. These assignments were contained within the Urban Transportation Systems Division of TTI. This report delineates the author's contribution to four particular projects and discusses the technical as well as non-technical experience gained from each. Having been exposed to more engineering situations than many of the other Doctor of Engineering students, the author has already formulated some rather specific milestones for the future. The Doctor of Engineering program is discussed in conjunction with its potential for helping the author attain these career goals and objectives. Also, some thoughts are presented regarding the Doctor of Engineering as a viable alternative to the Ph.D. in preparing for a career in engineering higher education.

Tippett, Donald Dwight, 1947- (Texas A&M University, December 1981)[more][less]
Abstract: This report presents a survey of the author's internship experience with Union Carbide Corporation's Texas City plant during the period July 1, 1980 through May 15, 1981. The ten and one-half month internship was spent as an engineering intern attached to the Maintenance Department, with access to virtually every staff and line component of the organization. The intent of this report is to demonstrate that this experience fulfills the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering internship. The author's internship activities can be divided into three major categories which correspond to the three principal internship objectives. The first objective required a study of the organization and how the individual parts function together to produce results. This study was conducted by taking part in various diverse orientations and small projects throughout the organization. The second objective called for development of interpersonal and management skills. This was accomplished by participating in all forms of daily business activities, talking with the observing managers, receiving formal management training and taking advantage of every opportunity to practice these important skills. The third objective required an identifiable contribution be made to one or more particular projects. The three principal projects to which the author contributed involved inventory control, industrial hygiene, and maintenance workforce utilization. The result of the internship experience was an appreciation for both the technical and non-technical aspects of operating a large chemical plant. The conclusion of the report is that the objectives were met and the internship requirement for the degree of Doctor of Engineering has been satisfied.

Abstract: This internship report describes the author's one-year internship at Walton & Associates/Consulting Engineers, Inc., (WACE) in Bryan, Texas, which occurred during [the] calendar year 1982. His primary internship objectives were to apply his knowledge and trainig to solve engineering problems and to develop administrative and managerial skills necessary to contribute to the successful operation of a small consulting engineering firm. Prior to beginning his internship, the author was Vice-President of WACE and Head of the Transportation Engineering and Civil Engineering Divisions of the firm. In the middle of 1982, he was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of WACE. The author was responsible for twenty (20) different engineering projects during the internship period. Thirteen (13) of the projects were completed during 1982, and the remaining seven (7) were carried into 1983 to completion. Nine (9) of the projects were categorized as Traffic Engineering projects while the remaining eleven (11) were general Civil Engineering projects. Additionally, the author wrote or co-authored four (4) project proposals, which ranged from a roadway optimization program for the City of Houston to the nationwide study of roadway edgeline widths for the Federal Highway Administration, and assisted in analyzing material for expert witness testimony in highway traffic accident-related tort claim lawsuits. The author's internship proved to be very beneficial. It allowed him to expand his engineering skills into various engineering disciplines, to become more involved in the day-to-day operation of a small engineering consulting firm, and to experience the difficulties inherent with the development of a young engineering firm. The author found that the internship fulfilled the specific objectives of the internship requirements, as established by himself, his academic committee, and his internship supervisor.
