Abstract: The primary aim of the this investigation was to examine the stability of subtropical sea-surface temperatures and reconstruct the surfaceto- benthos thermal gradient. High-resolution stable isotopic analyses (δ18O and δ13C) were conducted on late middle Eocene planktonic and benthic foraminifers recovered from Hole 1051B, Blake Nose, western North Atlantic. The sequence comprises a siliceous nannofossil and foraminifer ooze, with well-preserved calcareous microfossils. Isotopic examination was conducted on the mixed-layer dweller Morozovella spinulosa and the benthic foraminifer Nuttalides truempyi at this subtropical site.

Abstract: To document the evolution of the early cryosphere, stable isotope analyses were conducted on the planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218. We generated two parallel 54- m-long records at 10-cm resolution and thus produced a standard Pacific stable isotope reference curve for the 26.4- to 30.0-Ma interval within the Oligocene. These data are necessary to document the timing and magnitude of glacial events through the Oligocene. Pronounced variations are recorded in both planktonic and benthic foraminifer δ13C between +0.32‰ and +1.67‰ and –0.18‰ and +1.09‰, respectively. There is an overall increase in δ18O though the record, toward heavier values in the late Oligocene.

Abstract: The decay of C-10 excited states to the 2p+2 alpha exit channel has been studied using an E/A=10.7 MeV C-10 beam inelastically scattered from a Be-9 target. Levels associated with two-proton decay to the ground state of Be-8 have been observed. These include states at 5.18 and 6.54 MeV which decay by sequential two-proton emission through the long-lived ground state of B-9. In addition, states at 5.3 and 6.57 MeV were found in which there is no long-lived intermediate state between the two proton emissions. For the 6.57 MeV state, the two protons are preferably emitted on the same side of the decaying C-10 fragment.

Abstract: Increasing air traffic control (ATC) requirements raises the workload of pilots. Required tasks dictate more “head-in-the-cockpit” computation, which can easily distract a pilot from safe airplane operation. Following eight years of research, we present an on-board PC-based computational system that increases pilot situational awareness, decreases diversion to routine computations, and anticipates upcoming needs. The key to anticipatory flight management is an expert system that uses knowledge of ATC procedures, aircraft operating procedures and limitations, and aircraft performance to infer current flight operating “mode” without direct pilot intervention or input. A flight mode interpreter (FMI) enables automatic display selection, pilot advice, and warning. This paper reports the development of an FMI-based flight management system, called General Aviation Pilot Advisory and Training System (GAPATS), that is being developed jointly by Texas A&M University and Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. Software development is carried out using a fixed-base engineering flight simulator. Pilot participation in all phases of development and evaluation is the norm. Flight tests have begun on an instrumented research light twin owned by the Texas A&M University Flight Mechanics Laboratory.

Abstract: Short thermalization times of less than 1 fm/c for quark and gluon matter have been suggested by recent experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It has been difficult to justify this rapid thermalization in first-principle calculations based on perturbation theory or the color glass condensate picture. Here, we address the related question of the decoherence of the gluon field, which is a necessary component of thermalization. We present a simplified leading-order computation of the decoherence time of a gluon ensemble subject to an incoming flux of Weizsacker-Williams gluons. We also discuss the entropy produced during the decoherence process and its relation to the entropy in the final state that has been measured experimentally.

Abstract: We report charged particle pair correlation analyses in the space of Delta phi (azimuth) and Delta eta (pseudorapidity), for central Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV in the STAR detector. The analysis involves unlike-sign charged pairs and like-sign charged pairs, which are transformed into charge-dependent (CD) signals and charge-independent (CI) signals. We present detailed parametrizations of the data. A model featuring dense gluonic hot spots as first proposed by Van Hove predicts that the observables under investigation would have sensitivity to such a substructure should it occur, and the model also motivates selection of transverse momenta in the range 0.8 < p(t)< 2.0 GeV/c. Both CD and CI correlations of high statistical significance are observed, and possible interpretations are discussed.

Abstract: By assuming that the isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction has a form similar to the Gogny-like effective two-body interaction with a Yukawa finite-range term and the momentum dependence originates only from the finite-range exchange interaction, we determine its parameters by comparing the predicted potential energy density functional in uniform nuclear matter with what has been usually given and used extensively in transport models for studying isospin effects in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions as well as in investigating the properties of hot asymmetric nuclear matter and neutron star matter. We then use the density matrix expansion to derive from the resulting finite-range exchange interaction an effective Skyrme-like zero-range interaction with density-dependent parameters. As an application, we study the transition density and pressure at the inner edge of neutron star crusts using the stability conditions derived from the linearized Vlasov equation for the neutron star matter.

Abstract: We analyze in detail how the scattering by nonmagnetic impurities affects the shape and amplitude of the order parameter (OF) and the density of states in anisotropic superconductors in the framework of BCS theory. Special attention is paid to the case when the OP is a mixture of d and s waves changing its sign on the Fermi surface. The critical temperature is shown to decay with the increase of the residual resistance according to the power law. At zero temperature impurity scattering gives rise to a peculiar phase transition from a gapless regime to a state with a finite gap in the quasiparticle spectrum.

Abstract: Expressing explicitly the parameters of the standard Skyrme interaction in terms of the macroscopic properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, we show in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that unambiguous correlations exist between observables of finite nuclei and nuclear matter properties. We find that existing data on neutron skin thickness Delta r(np) of Sn isotopes give an important constraint on the symmetry energy E(sym)(rho(0)) and its density slope L at saturation density rho(0). Combining these constraints with those from recent analyses of isospin diffusion and the double neutron/proton ratio in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies leads to a more stringent limit on L approximately independent of E(sym)(rho(0)). The implication of these new constraints on the Delta r(np) of (208)Pb as well as the core-crust transition density and pressure in neutron stars is discussed.

Abstract: We report on a comparative numerical study of the spin-Hall conductivity in two dimensions for three different spin-orbit interaction models
the standard k-linear Rashba model, the k-cubic Rashba model that describes two-dimensional hole systems, and a modified k-linear Rashba model in which the spin-orbit coupling strength is energy dependent. Numerical finite-size Kubo formula results indicate that the spin-Hall conductivity of the k-linear Rashba model vanishes for frequency omega much smaller than the scattering rate tau(-1), with first-order relative fluctuations surviving out to large system sizes. For the k-cubic Rashba model case, the spin-Hall conductivity does not depend noticeably on omega tau and is finite in the dc limit, in agreement with experiment. For the modified k-linear Rashba model the spin-Hall conductivity is noticeably omega tau dependent but approaches a finite value in the dc limit. We discuss these results in the light of a spectral decomposition of the spin-Hall conductivity and associated sum rules, and in relation to a proposed separation of the spin-Hall conductivity into skew-scattering, intrinsic, and interband vertex correction contributions.
