Abstract: We consider a stochastically growing or evaporating interface in the presence of disorder which is correlated in the direction normal to the interface. The growth or evaporation rate at randomly distributed disorder points is assumed to be different from that of the rest of the interface. This model is of relevance not only to island growth in overlayers, but also to the domain growth in an ultrathin magnetic film after reversal of the magnetization. For a growing one-dimensional interface or a moving domain wall in a magnetic film on a crystal surface, this type of correlated disorder simulates the effect of, e.g., surface steps or grain boundaries on the growth process while, for a growing or evaporating crystal surface, it describes the effect of screw dislocations or of grain boundaries again. We show that, for interface dimensions d = 1,2 during the growth (or evaporation) e-scale faceting develops, although on a small scale the interface is rough. Exploiting the formal connection between the interface model and the model used in the problem of flux line localization in a superconductor we show that correlated disorder localizes the flux line in the presence of point disorder.

Abstract: We study the influence of a fast noise on Landau-Zener transitions. We demonstrate that a fast colored noise much weaker than the conventional white noise can produce transitions itself or can change substantially the Landau-Zener transition probabilities. In the limit of fast colored or strong white noise we derive asymptotically exact formulas for transition probabilities and study the time evolution of a spin coupled to the noise and a sweeping magnetic field.

Abstract: We show by direct calculation starting from a microscopic model that the two-state system with time-dependent energy levels in the presence of fast quantum noise obeys the master equation. The solution of master equation is found analytically and analyzed in a broad range of parameters. The fast transverse noise affects the transition probability during much longer time (the accumulation time) than the longitudinal one. The action of the fast longitudinal noise is restricted by the shorter Landau-Zener time, the same as in the regular Landau-Zener process. The large ratio of time scales allows solving the Landau-Zener problem with longitudinal noise only, and then solving the same problem with the transverse noise only and matching the two solutions. The correlation of the longitudinal and transverse noise renormalizes the Landau-Zener transition matrix element and can strongly enhance the survival probability, whereas the transverse noise always reduces it. If the noise is fast, its intensity at which the multiquantum processes become essential corresponds to a deeply adiabatic regime. We briefly discuss possible applications of the general theory to the molecular magnets.

Abstract: We present nonadiabatic simulations of the coherent response of crystalline GaAs irradiated by intense femtosecond-scale laser pulses. Above a threshold fluence, which corresponds to promotion of about 12% of the valence electrons into the conduction band, the lattice is destabilized and the electronic band gap collapses to zero. This confirms the nonthermal nature of recently observed structural changes driven by electronic excitations and occurring during the first few hundred femtoseconds.

Abstract: We present a theoretical study of (Ga,Mn)(As,C) diluted magnetic semiconductors with high C acceptor density that combines insights from phenomenological model and microscopic approaches. A tight-binding coherent-potential approximation is used to describe the electronic structure in the presence of Mn-Ga and C-As impurities. We find only a small effect of C on the distribution and coherence of electronic states close to the top of the valence band and on the coupling between Mn moments, even at doping levels of several per cent. These results justify applying the model of ferromagnetic Mn-Mn coupling mediated by itinerant holes in the valence band also to C doped samples. The increase of ferromagnetic transition temperature due to the presence of C acceptors is illustrated by calculations that use the k.p Kohn-Luttinger description of the GaAs valence band and assume systems where Mn local moment and itinerant hole densities can be varied independently.

Abstract: We present a different method of extracting the angular distribution of ejected electrons in an ion-atom collision from a two-centered finite Hilbert basis-set calculation. We obtain good agreement with experiment for a p+H collision at 20 keV if we include an interference between the target centered and projectile centered amplitudes.

Abstract: We measured (14)O+(4)He excitation functions for elastic scattering which demonstrate, for the first time, a well developed alpha-cluster structure in the proton rich nucleus, (18)Ne. We present the excitation energies and estimates of the spins for the dominant resonances using an R-matrix approach. A resonance at 9.2 MeV excitation energy in (18)Ne is particularly interesting. The spin-parity of the state is found to be 3(-) and the alpha particle reduced width for the state appears to be comparable to the single particle limit. We have found indications for unusually large size of the observed alpha-cluster configuration.

Abstract: Flux motion in anisotropic type-II superconductors is studied in the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. Expressions for the flux-flow resistivity tensor (including all the longitudinal and Hall elements) are obtained for the case that the applied magnetic field H is parallel to one of the principal axes of the sample and H is near the upper critical field H(c2). A simple method is proposed for obtaining the anisotropy ratios from the H dependences of the longitudinal resistivities.

Abstract: Elastic scattering of 240 MeV (6)Li ions from (116)Sn was measured from 4(degrees)<=theta(c.m.)<= 32(degrees). The data were fitted with a Woods-Saxon phenomenological potential and with double folding models using the M3Y NN effective interaction with and without density dependence. DWBA calculations with the fitted parameters were used to calculate cross sections for inelastic scattering to low-lying 2(+)and 3(-) states. B(E2) and B(E3) values were extracted and compared with electromagnetic values and those obtained from alpha inelastic scattering.

Abstract: The sum rule strength of the high energy octupole resonance (HEOR) and the transition rates of low-lying 2(+) and 3(-) states of Sn-116, excited by 240 MeV alpha scattering, have been determined from deformed potential and folding model analyses. Deformed potential cross sections for both the low-lying 3(-) state and the HEOR are greater than folding cross sections by a factor of 1.18. The high energy octupole resonance was found to exhaust (70+/-15)% and (83 +/- 15)% of the E3 energy-weighted sum rule from the two analyses, respectively. The data for the low-lying states are fit well by the calculations made with both models using electromagnetic values for the transition rates. Optical-model parameters were obtained from fits to elastic scattering data. The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering and inelastic scattering exciting the low-lying 2(+) and 3(-) states in Sn-116 were measured over the angle range from theta(c.m.)=1.6 degrees to 35.2 degrees.

Abstract: Multifragmentation, following the formation of toroidal and bubble nuclei, is observed with an improved Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model for central Mo-92 + Mo-92 collisions. With a stiff equation of state, simultaneous explosion into several nearly equal fragments in a ringlike manner occurs due to the formation of metastable toroidal nuclei. In contrast, with a soft equation of state, simultaneous explosion into several nearly equal fragments in a volumelike manner occurs due to the formation of metastable bubble nuclei. Experimental signatures for the formation of these exotic shapes are discussed.

Abstract: We present the detail of a newly developed relativistic transport model (ART 1.0) for high energy heavy-ion collisions. Using this model, we first study the general collision dynamics between heavy ions at the AGS energies. We then show that in central collisions there exists a large volume of sufficiently long-lived superdense hadronic matter whose local baryon and energy densities exceed the critical densities for the hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma transition. The size and lifetime of this matter are found to depend strongly on the equation of state. We also investigate the degree and time scale of thermalization as well as the radial flow during the expansion of the superdense hadronic matter. The flow velocity profile and the temperature of the hadronic matter at freeze-out are extracted. The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of protons, pions, and kaons calculated with and without the mean field are compared with each other and also with the preliminary data from the E866/E802 Collaboration to search for experimental observables that are sensitive to the equation of state. It is found that these inclusive, single particle observables depend weakly on the equation of state. The difference between results obtained with and without the nuclear mean field is only about 20%. The baryon transverse collective flow in the reaction plane is also analyzed. It is shown that both the flow parameter and the strength of the ''bounce-off'' effect are very sensitive to the equation of state. In particular, a soft equation of state with a compressibility of 200 MeV results in an increase of the flow parameter by a factor of 2.5 compared to the cascade case without the mean field. This large effect makes it possible to distinguish the predictions from different theoretical models and to detect the signatures of the quark-gluon plasma which is expected to significantly soften the equation of state.

Abstract: Polarized proton beams and a liquid-deuterium target were used to measure the analyzing power for quasifree p-n over arrow pointing right and p-p over arrow pointing right scattering in the forward direction at 643 and 797 MeV. Alternate use of a liquid-hydrogen hydrogen target provided a comparison of free and quasifree p-p over arrow pointing right scattering. The precision of the data is in general +/-0.01 to +/-0.02, although some of the p-p over arrow pointing right data for 797 MeV are at the precision level of +/-0.005. For c.m. angles theta* greater-than-or-equal-to 22-degrees there is no difference between quasifree and free results at either energy. The data are compared with the predictions of several phase-shift analyses. In a search for more pronounced quasifree scattering effects, a small amount of p-''p'' over arrow pointing right data were taken with a carbon target.

Abstract: We report the measurement of Lambda and (Lambda) over bar yields and inverse slope parameters in d+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV at forward and backward rapidities (y=+/- 2.75), using data from the STAR forward time projection chambers. The contributions of different processes to baryon transport and particle production are probed exploiting the inherent asymmetry of the d+Au system. Comparisons to model calculations show that baryon transport on the deuteron side is consistent with multiple collisions of the deuteron nucleons with gold participants. On the gold side, HIJING-based models without a hadronic rescattering phase do not describe the measured particle yields, while models that include target remnants or hadronic rescattering do. The multichain model can provide a good description of the net baryon density in d+Au collisions at energies currently available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and the derived parameters of the model agree with those from nuclear collisions at lower energies.

Abstract: By decomposing the important sampled imaginary time Schrodinger evolution operator to fourth order with positive coefficients, we derived a number of distinct fourth-order diffusion Monte Carlo algorithms. These sophisticated algorithms require higher derivatives of the drift velocity and local energy and are more complicated to program. However, they allowed very large time steps to be used, converged faster with lesser correlations, and virtually eliminated the step size error.
