Abstract: We have measured cross sections for (d,He-2)-induced reactions on Mg-26 at an energy of E(d)=125.2 MeV. The measured Gamow-Teller strength is significantly smaller than that inferred from (p,n) reactions. We demonstrate that beta(+) Gamow-Teller strengths for T-0 + 1 states deduced from (p,n) reactions may have significant systematic uncertainties due to ambiguities in the large backgrounds that must be subtracted.

Abstract: We consider the evolution of d(x)(2)-y(2) pairing, mediated by nearly critical spin fluctuations, with the coupling strength. We show that the onset temperature for pairing, T(*), smoothly evolves between weak and strong couplings passing through a broad maximum at intermediate coupling. At strong coupling, T(*) is of order of the magnetic exchange energy J. We argue that for all couplings, pairing is confined to the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We also find that thermal spin fluctuations only modestly reduce T(*), even at criticality, but they substantially smooth the gap anisotropy. The latter evolves with coupling being the largest at weak coupling.

Abstract: Recently quantum beat lasers have been considered as a source of entangled radiation [S. Qamar, F. Ghafoor, M. Hillery, and M. S. Zubairy, Phys. Rev. A 77, 062308 (2008)]. We investigate and quantify the entanglement of this system when the initial cavity modes are prepared in a Gaussian two-mode state, one being a nonclassical state and the other a thermal state. It is investigated how the output entanglement varies with the nonclassicality of the input Gaussian state, thermal noise, and the strength of the driving field.

Abstract: The giant resonance region in Ca-40 was studied with inelastic scattering of 240 MeV alpha particles at small angles including 0 degrees. A peak at E-x = 17.5 +/- 0.4 MeV with Gamma = 4.95 +/- 0.25 MeV was found to contain 33 +/- 4% of the isoscalar E0 energy-weighted-sum-mle (EWSR) strength and 57 +/- 6% of the isoscalar E2 EWSR. Evidence was found for 92 +/- 15% of the isoscalar E0 EWSR between 8 < E-x < 29 MeV with a centroid of 18.9 +/- 0.4 MeV and a rms half width of 11.1 MeV but a definitive L = 0 assignment could not be made. The resulting E-GMR is in agreement with systematics from heavier nuclei.

Abstract: The giant resonance region in Si-28 was studied with inelastic scattering of 240 MeV alpha particles at small angles including 0 degrees. The giant resonance peak extended from E-x=12 MeV to 35 MeV and E0 strength corresponding to 54 +/- 6% of the isoscalar EO energy weighted sum rule was identified between E-x = 11-35 MeV with a centroid of 21.5 +/- 0.3 MeV and an rms width of 5.9 +/- 0.2 MeV. E2 strength corresponding to 32 +/- 5% of the isoscalar E2 sum rule was identified with a centroid of E-x = 19.0 +/- 0.2 MeV and rms width of 1.7 +/- 0.2 MeV. Elastic scattering was measured from theta(c.m.) = 3 degrees to 47 degrees and optical parameters obtained. Inelastic scattering to states at 1.78, 6.88, 10.2, and 11.1 MeV was measured and deformation lengths and L components extracted.

Abstract: The strength distribution of the giant monopole resonance in Ni-58 has been measured from E-x = 10 to 35 MeV using small-angle scattering of 240-MeV alpha particles. E0 strength corresponding to 74(-12)(+22)% of the E0 EWSR was found between E-x = 12.0 and 31.1 MeV with a centroid of 20.30(-0.14)(+1.69) MeV.

Abstract: Giant resonances in (116)Sn were measured by inelastic scattering of (6)Li ions at E(6)Li=240 MeV over the angle range 0(degrees)-6(degrees). Isoscalar E0-E3 strength distributions were obtained with a double folding model analysis. A total of 106(-11)(+27)% of the E0 EWSR was found in the excitation energy range from 8 MeV to 30 MeV with a centroid (m(1)/m(0)) energy 15.39(-0.20)(+0.35) MeV in agreement with results obtained with alpha inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Elastic and inelastic scattering of 240 MeV (6)Li particles from (24)Mg and (28)Si were measured with the MDM spectrometer. Optical potential parameters for (6)Li+(24)Mg and (6)Li+(28)Si scattering systems were obtained by fitting elastic scattering with two different folding model potentials as well as W-S potentials. E0-E3 giant resonance strength distributions for (28)Si and (24)Mg were obtained. E0 strength corresponding to 106(-24)(+34)% of the EWSR was identified in (24)Mg and 80(-20)(+35)% was found for (28)Si between E(x)=8.0 to 40.0 MeV.

Abstract: The giant resonance region from 10 MeV <E-x< 55 MeV in Sn-112 and Sn-124 has been studied with inelastic scattering of 240 MeV ? particles at small angles including 0andDEG
. Essentially, all of the expected isoscalar E0-E3 strength was located in both nuclei. The isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonance energies was found to be consistent with relativistic and nonrelativistic calculations for interactions with K-NM andSIM
220-240 MeV.

Isoscalar monopole strength in Ti-46 (Ti-48) was found corresponding to have 71+15/-12% (96+14/-12%) of the E0 energy weighted sum rule (EWSR) with a centroid of 18.66+0.65/-0.25% MeV (18.80+0.45/-0.18% MeV), respectively. In Ti-46 (Ti-48), 46 +/- 12% (56 +/- 12%) of the E1, and 60 +/- 11% (87 +/- 11%) of the E2 EWSR were identified.
