Abstract: Measurements of the spin-transfer parameter K(LL) for H-2(p, n)2p at 0-degrees to calibrate the neutron-beam polarization clarify a normalization discrepancy affecting np data at LAMPF. The new data are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Based on interaction potentials between a heavy quark and antiquark as extracted from recent QCD lattice calculations, we set up a Brueckner-type many-body scheme to study the properties of light (anti-) quarks in a quark-gluon plasma at moderate temperatures, T similar or equal to 1-2 T(c). The quark-antiquark T matrix, including both color-singlet and color-octet channels, and corresponding quark self-energies and spectral functions are calculated self-consistently. The repulsive octet potential induces quasiparticle masses of up to 150 MeV, whereas the attractive color-singlet part generates resonance structures in the q-q T matrix, which in turn lead to quasiparticle widths of similar to 200 MeV. This corresponds to scattering rates of similar to 1 fm(-1) and may reflect liquid-like properties of the system.

Abstract: We present the first measurements of the rho(770)(0),K(*)(892),Delta(1232)(++),Sigma(1385), and Lambda(1520) resonances in d+Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV, reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels using the STAR detector (the solenoidal tracker at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). The masses and widths of these resonances are studied as a function of transverse momentum p(T). We observe that the resonance spectra follow a generalized scaling law with the transverse mass m(T). The of resonances in minimum bias collisions are compared with the of pi,K, and p. The rho(0)/pi(-),K(*)/K(-),Delta(++)/p,Sigma(1385)/Lambda, and Lambda(1520)/Lambda ratios in d+Au collisions are compared with the measurements in minimum bias p+p interactions, where we observe that both measurements are comparable. The nuclear modification factors (R(dAu)) of the rho(0),K(*), and Sigma(*) scale with the number of binary collisions (N(bin)) for p(T)> 1.2 GeV/c.

Abstract: The scattering cross sections of charm mesons with hadrons such as the pion, rho meson, and nucleon are studied in an effective Lagrangian. In heavy ion collisions, rescattering of produced charm mesons by hadrons affects the invariant mass spectra of both charm meson pairs and dileptons resulting from their decays. These effects are estimated for heavy ion collisions at Super Proton Synchrotron energies and are found to be significant.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of pions, protons, and antiprotons in Au+Au collisions at intermediate RHIC energy root s(NN)=62 GeV are studied in a model that includes both quark coalescence from the dense partonic matter and fragmentation of the quenched perturbative minijet partons. The resulting baryon to meson ratio at intermediate transverse momenta is predicted to be larger than that seen in experiments at higher center of mass energies.

Abstract: We derive classically an expression for a hadron width in a two-phase region of hadron gas and quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The presence of QGP gives hadrons larger widths than they would have in a pure hadron gas. We find that the phi width observed in a central Au+Au collision at square-root s = 200 GeV/nucleon is a few MeV greater than the width in a pure hadron gas. The part of observed hadron widths due to QGP is approximately proportional to (dN/dy)-1/3.

Abstract: We have measured the half-life of the electron-capture (ec) decay of (97)Ru in a metallic environment, both at low temperature (19 K), and also at room temperature. We find the half-lives at both temperatures to be the same within 0.1%. This demonstrates that a recent claim that the ec decay half-life for (7)Be changes by 0.9% +/- 0.2% under similar circumstances certainly cannot be generalized to other ec decays. Our results for the half-life of (97)Ru, 2.8370(14) d at room temperature and 2.8382(14) d at 19K, are consistent with, but much more precise than, previous room-temperature measurements. In addition, we have also measured the half-lives of the beta(-)-emitters (103)Ru and (105)Rh at both temperatures, and found them also to be unchanged.

Abstract: The resistivity of codeposited amorphous Ti1-xAlx films has been measured from 1.5 to 300 K over the composition range 0.4 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.92, and the Hall coefficient has been measured at 4 K. The resistivity exhibits a relatively small temperature dependence. The magnitude of the room-temperature resistivity varies appreciably with composition, with a broad maximum around 250 muOMEGA cm near x almost-equal-to 0.5. The Hall coefficient is positive at x = 0.4 and increases to a maximum at x almost-equal-to 0.6. It becomes negative at x almost-equal-to 0.85 with a value comparable to that of liquid Al at the highest value of x. The positive values of the Hall coefficient and their dramatic increase with x below x almost-equal-to 0. 5 are discussed in terms of current theories for a positive Hall coefficient.

Abstract: Measurements of the Hall coefficient and resistivity for highly oriented Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8+delta thin films are reported. The temperature dependence of cotTHETA(H), where THETA(H) is the normal-state Hall angle, for a single-phase (2:2:1:2) film sample and for other Tl-based phases is found to be linear in T2. This behavior is in agreement with recent predictions based on Anderson's spinon-holon model, but it is surprisingly general since it still holds for samples in which the resistivity does not follow Anderson's predicted linear behavior and in which superconductivity is partially or completely suppressed.

Abstract: Using a rotating magnetic field, the Hall effect in three-dimensional amorphous GdxSi1-x has been measured in the critical regime of the metal-insulator transition for a constant total magnetic field. The Hall coefficient R-0 is negative, indicating electronlike conductivity, with a magnitude that increases with decreasing conductivity. R-0 diverges at the metal-insulator transition, and displays critical behavior with exponent -1 [R(0)similar to(H-H-C)(-1)]. This dependence is interpreted as a linear decrease in the density of mobile carriers nsimilar toR(0)(-1)similar toH-H-C, indicative of the dominant influence of interaction effects.

Abstract: We compare the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) and the thermal light ghost imaging schemes in both near and far fields. Both effects arise as a result of the intensity fluctuations of the thermal light and we find that the essential physics behind the two effects is the same. The difference however is that, in the ghost imaging, large number of bits information of an object needs to be treated together, whereas, in the HBT, there is only one bit information required to be obtained. In the HBT experiment far field is used for the purpose of easy detection, while in the ghost image experiment near (or not far) field is used for good quality image.

Abstract: Thermalization and collective flow of charm (c) and bottom (b) quarks in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are evaluated based on elastic parton rescattering in an expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We show that resonant interactions in a strongly interacting QGP (sQGP), as well as parton coalescence, can play an essential role in the interpretation of recent data from the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC), and thus illuminate the nature of the sQGP and its hadronization. Our main assumption, motivated by recent findings in lattice quantum chromodynamics, is the existence of D- and B-meson states in the sQGP, providing resonant cross sections for heavy quarks. Pertinent drag and diffusion coefficients are implemented into a relativistic Langevin simulation to compute transverse-momentum spectra and azimuthal asymmetries (v(2)) of b- and c-quarks in Au-Au collisions at RHIC. After hadronization into D- and B-mesons using quark coalescence and fragmentation, associated electron-decay spectra and v(2) are compared to recent RHIC data. Our results suggest a reevaluation of radiative and elastic quark energy-loss mechanisms in the sQGP.

Abstract: Recently, it has been demonstrated that the chemical composition of jets in heavy ion collisions is significantly altered compared to the jets in the vacuum. This signal can be used to probe the medium formed in nuclear collisions. In this study we investigate the possibility that fast light quarks and gluons can convert to heavy quarks when passing through a quark-gluon plasma. We study the rate of light to heavy jet conversions in a consistent Fokker-Planck framework and investigate their impact on the production of high-p(T) charm and bottom quarks at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider.
