Abstract: We present the first measurements of identified hadron production, azimuthal anisotropy, and pion interferometry from Au + Au collisions below the nominal injection energy at the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The data were collected using the large acceptance solenoidal tracker at RHIC (STAR) detector at root s(NN) = 9.2 GeV from a test run of the collider in the year 2008. Midrapidity results on multiplicity density dN/dy in rapidity y, average transverse momentum , particle ratios, elliptic flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) radii are consistent with the corresponding results at similar root s(NN) from fixed-target experiments. Directed flow measurements are presented for both midrapidity and forward-rapidity regions. Furthermore the collision centrality dependence of identified particle dN/dy, , and particle ratios are discussed. These results also demonstrate that the capabilities of the STAR detector, although optimized for root s(NN) = 200 GeV, are suitable for the proposed QCD critical-point search and exploration of the QCD phase diagram at RHIC.

Abstract: This article examines the potential changes to the information seeking behavior of scholars and how they manage their own collection of research article “reprints”. With bibliographic databases and electronic journals provided by academic libraries now available at the science scholars’ computer desktop, they can now locate and acquire a portion of needed research articles on their own at any time. They also, in some cases, have older paper copies scanned and delivered by libraries as image files at web retrieval locations. Bibliographic citation management software is now in use by many scholars. Personal information management software is available and could also be used. This article reviews possible scenarios scholars can use to manage this new electronic collection of research articles and possible ways libraries can help them in this scholarly activity.

Abstract: We report new shell-model calculations of the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction delta(C) to superallowed 0(+)-> 0(+) nuclear beta decay. The most important improvement is the inclusion of core orbitals, which are demonstrated to have a significant impact on the mismatch in the radial wave functions of the parent and daughter states. We determine which core orbitals are important to include from an examination of measured spectroscopic factors in single-nucleon pickup reactions. In addition, where new sets of effective interactions have become available since our last calculation, we now include them
this leads to small changes in delta(NS) as well. We also examine the new radiative-correction calculation by Marciano and Sirlin and, by a simple reorganization, show that it is possible to preserve the conventional separation into a nucleus-independent "inner" radiative term, Delta(V)(R), and a nucleus-dependent "outer" term, delta(')(R). We tabulate the new values for delta(C),delta(NS), and delta(')(R) for 20 superallowed transitions, including the 13 currently well-studied cases. With these new correction terms, the corrected Ft values for the 13 cases are statistically consistent with one another, and the anomalousness of the (46)V result disappears. These new calculations lead to a lower average (Ft) over bar value and a higher value for V(ud). The sum of squares of the top-row elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix now agrees exactly with unitarity.

Abstract: We present new improved R matrix fits of direct data and indirect Trojan Horse data for the (15)N(p,alpha)(12)C reaction and provide a more accurate recommended value of S(0)=73.0 +/- 5.0 MeV b from direct Redder data [A. Redder , Z. Phys. A 305, 325 (1982)] and S(0)=70.0 +/- 13.5 MeV b from the Trojan Horse data [M. La Cognata , Phys. Rev. C 76, 065804 (2007)]. We also analyze a recent fit by Barker [F. C. Barker, Phys. Rev. C 78, 044611 (2008)] and demonstrate that when all the uncertainties are taken into account, our results overlap with his. We also provide a fit of the Trojan Horse data that properly takes into account finite residual energy resolution of the data.

Abstract: We show that it is possible to improve the efficiency of a classical Otto-cycle heat engine by adding a high-Q microwave cavity and a laser system that can extract coherent laser energy from thermally excited "exhaust" atoms. This improvement does not violate the second law of thermodynamics, i.e., we show that a combined high-Q microwave cavity and a laser system does not improve the efficiency of a classical Carnot-cycle heat engine.

Abstract: In a d-wave superconductor (d-SC), a unitary impurity can induce a near-zero-energy resonant peak in the local tunneling density of states (LTDOS) due to the sign change of the order parameter (OP) on the Fermi surface. If a d-SC is quasi-two-dimensional, a large parallel magnetic field can drive it into the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, with an OP also changing sign in the real space like a checkerboard pattern. This double sign change leads to very subtle effects caused by a unitary impurity in the LTDOS for two locally stable locations of the impurity.

Abstract: The effect of impurities on Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a layered superconductor with d-wave pairing symmetry is investigated using the tight-binding model and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. At low temperature and a strong exchange or Zeeman field applied parallel to its conducting plane, a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice-like Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is more energetically favorable in a clean system. In the presence of impurities, the spatial profile of the order parameter remains as a 2D square lattice, and it is distorted only near the impurities when the impurity concentration is low. As impurity concentration is increased to a certain level, a quasi-one-dimensional (1D)-like FFLO state becomes more energetically favorable. Increasing temperature with fixed impurity concentration can also induce a 2D to 1D FFLO state transition. Within the present finite-size calculation, we did not find the existence of the Fulde and Ferrell state before the system becomes normal as the impurity concentration is raised.

Abstract: The local density of states (LDOS) and its Fourier component induced by a unitary impurity in a supercurrent-carrying d-wave superconductor are investigated. Both of these quantities possess a reflection symmetry about the line passing through the impurity site and along the supercurrent if it is applied along the antinodal or nodal direction. With increasing supercurrent, both the coherence and resonant peaks in LDOS are suppressed and slightly broadened. Under a supercurrent along the antinodal direction, the coherence peaks split into double peaks. The modulation wave vectors associated with the elastic scatterings of quasiparticles by the defect from one constant-energy piece of the Fermi surface to another are displayed as bright. or dark spots in the Fourier space of the LDOS image, and they may be suppressed or enhanced and shifted, depending on the applied current and the bias voltage.

Abstract: We present results for two-particle transverse momentum correlations, , as a function of event centrality for Au+Au collisions at root SNN = 20, 62, 130, and 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We observe correlations decreasing with centrality that are similar at all four incident energies. The correlations multiplied by the multiplicity density increase with incident energy, and the centrality dependence may show evidence of processes such as thermalization, jet production, or the saturation of transverse flow. The square root of the correlations divided by the event-wise average transverse momentum per event shows little or no beam energy dependence and generally agrees with previous measurements made at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron.

Abstract: We report a measurement of high-p(T) inclusive pi(0), eta, and direct photon production in p + p and d + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV at midrapidity (0 gamma gamma were detected in the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The eta -> gamma gamma decay was also observed and constituted the first eta measurement by STAR. The first direct photon cross-section measurement by STAR is also presented
the signal was extracted statistically by subtracting the pi(0), eta, and omega(782) decay background from the inclusive photon distribution observed in the calorimeter. The analysis is described in detail, and the results are found to be in good agreement with earlier measurements and with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the effect of phase fluctuations of the pump field upon the entanglement generation in a two-photon correlated emission laser (CEL). We consider initial vacuum and coherent state for the two-cavity modes. In both cases, we find reduction in the entanglement due to the phase fluctuations. However, our results indicate that entanglement generation is highly sensitive to phase fluctuations when we have initial coherent state in the two modes.

Abstract: Torsional-oscillator studies of very thin He-4 films have found nonuniversal behavior of the superfluid response as a function of coverage. The temperature width of the superfluid transition region is nonmonotonic in the areal density n and exhibits cusplike variations at half of the layering period. We explore the assumption that this additional broadening is caused by macroscopic inhomogeneities in the substrate potential; such a theory for inhomogeneous broadening can be constructed from the Kosterlitz-Nelson relation between the superfluid areal density n(s) and the transition temperature T(c) by determining the theoretical ''sensitivity'' S of n(s) to variations in the strength of the substrate potential. For substrate models that are atomically uniform, a simple microscopic hypernetted-chain calculation (without either ''elementary diagrams'' or three-body correlations, but with an optimized Jastrow function) finds this sensitivity always to be of the same sign, and yields reasonable order-of-magnitude agreement with experiment. However, models for which the sensitivity does not change sign appear to be incapable of yielding either the cusps or the half-periodicity of the data. We suggest that these properties may occur with a more recently developed (and more sophisticated) version of hypernetted-chain theory, wherein ''elementary diagrams'' and three-body correlations are incorporated.
