Abstract: The Lamb shift of a hydrogen atom due to the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes is calculated and we observe both band edge and surface enhancement. The atom sits inside a thin metal slab which is sandwiched by two semi-infinite dielectrics. The SPP dispersion relation shows a band gap if the two dielectrics have different dielectric constants. We find the magnitude of the 2P(1/2) level shift increases rapidly when the level separation is close to the high band edge. But the low band edge enhancement can be overwhelmed by the decreasing trend of the shift. If the atom is placed close to either surface or if the slab is narrow, all the level shifts would be large because of the surface enhancement. An interesting feature is that the 2P(1/2) level shift can be larger than the 2S level shift due to the nonisotropic fields.

Abstract: We present an exact asymptotic solution for electron transition amplitudes in an infinite linear chain driven by an external time-dependent electric field. This solution extends the Landau-Zener theory for the case of an infinite number of states in the discrete spectrum. In addition to the transition amplitudes we calculate the effective diffusion constant.

Abstract: We experimentally study the group time delay for a light pulse propagating through hot Rb-87 vapor in the presence of a strong coupling field in a Lambda configuration. We demonstrate that the ultraslow pulse propagation is transformed into superluminal propagation as the one-photon detuning of the light increases due to the change in the transmission resonance line shape. Negative group velocity as low as -c/10(6)=-80 m/s is recorded. We also find that the advance time in the regime of the superluminal propagation grows linearly with increasing laser field power.

Abstract: Coherent acoustic oscillations in Bi and Ag nanowire samples were studied with a femtosecond pump-probe technique and detection of the scattered light. The observed optical and acoustic properties reflect the nanostructure of these materials. The electronic and lattice contributions to the excitation of coherent acoustic phonons are described using a two-temperature model. The excitation is performed at different laser fluences, and the high density of optically induced excitations modifies the state of the lattice. A transient state with softening of the lattice was observed in Ag nanowire samples.

Abstract: Many springs do not obey Hooke's Law because they are constructed to have an intrinsic tension which must be overcome before normal elongation occurs. This property, well-known to engineers, is universally neglected in elementary physics courses. In fact it can be used to enhance learning and to deepen understanding of potential energy.

Abstract: Absolute branching ratios for the beta decay of Cu-57 to excited states up to 3.3 MeV in Ni-57 have been determined, including the rho-forbidden Gamow-Teller transition to the first excited state in Ni-57. Four transitions to excited states at 0.768, 1.113, 2.443, and 3.007 MeV are observed in addition to the superallowed decay to the ground state of Ni-57. The, measured branching ratio to the ground state is 89.9 +/- 0.8% and the branching ratios to the four excited states are 0.94 +/- 0.09%, 8.6 +/- 0.6%, 0.17 +/- 0.03%, and 0.35 +/- 0.04%, respectively. In addition we have measured the Cu-57 half-life and find it to be 196.3 +/- 0.7 ms, which is in good agreement with the most recent measurement. B(GT) values have been extracted from the new results and are compared to shell model calculations.

Abstract: Using an isospin-dependent transport model for heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies, we study the production of light clusters such as deuteron, triton, and He-3 via coalescence of nucleons. We find that both the yields and the energy spectra of these light clusters are affected significantly by the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, with a stiffer symmetry energy giving a larger yield.

Abstract: The large saturation magnetization in conventional dense moment ferromagnets offers a flexible means of manipulating the ordered state through demagnetizing shape anisotropy fields, but these dipolar fields, in turn, limit the integrability of magnetic elements in information storage devices. We show that in a (Ga,Mn)As dilute-moment ferromagnet, with comparatively weaker magnetic dipole interactions, locally tunable magnetocrystalline anisotropy can take the role of the internal field which determines the magnetic configuration. Experiments and theoretical modeling are presented for lithographically patterned microchannels, and the phenomenon is attributed to lattice relaxations across the channels. The utility of locally controlled magnetic anisotropies is demonstrated in current-induced switching experiments. We report structure sensitive, current-induced in-plane magnetization switchings well below the Curie temperature at critical current densities similar to 10(5) A cm(-2). The observed phenomenology shows signatures of a contribution from domain-wall spin-transfer-torque effects.

Abstract: The subwavelength localization of an ensemble of atoms concentrated to a small volume in space is investigated. The localization relies on the interaction of the ensemble with a standing wave laser field. The light scattered in the interaction of the standing wave field and the atom ensemble depends on the position of the ensemble relative to the standing wave nodes. This relation can be described by a fluorescence intensity profile, which depends on the standing wave field parameters and the ensemble properties and which is modified due to collective effects in the ensemble of nearby particles. We demonstrate that the intensity profile can be tailored to suit different localization setups. Finally, we apply these results to two localization schemes. First, we show how to localize an ensemble fixed at a certain position in the standing wave field. Second, we discuss localization of an ensemble passing through the standing wave field.

Abstract: We study the local single-particle tunneling characteristics [as observed with scanning tunnel microscopy (STM)] for N-D and S-D tunneling, where D is a d-wave superconductor with a {100}{110} grain boundary. The tunneling Hamiltonian method is used. The self-consistent order parameter is first determined using the quasiclassical Green's-function method, and then the tunneling characteristics at various distances from the interface, reflectivity of the interface, and temperature, are studied. For N-D tunneling, a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) occurs near the interface, with diminishing magnitude away from it. For S-D tunneling, the ZBCP splits to exhibit the gap of the s-wave low-T-c superconducting tunneling tip, and there is a range of negative conductance just outside the peaks, when the tunneling point is near the grain boundary. The results are compared with those obtained by using a constant order parameter in each grain.

Abstract: The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider presents a systematic study of high-transverse-momentum charged-di-hadron correlations at small azimuthal pair separation Delta phi in d+Au and central Au+Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV. Significant correlated yield for pairs with large longitudinal separation Delta eta is observed in central Au+Au collisions, in contrast to d+Au collisions. The associated yield distribution in Delta eta x Delta phi can be decomposed into a narrow jet-like peak at small angular separation which has a similar shape to that found in d+Au collisions, and a component that is narrow in Delta phi and depends only weakly on Delta eta, the "ridge." Using two systematically independent determinations of the background normalization and shape, finite ridge yield is found to persist for trigger p(t)>6 GeV/c, indicating that it is correlated with jet production. The transverse-momentum spectrum of hadrons comprising the ridge is found to be similar to that of bulk particle production in the measured range (2 < p(t)< 4 GeV/c).

Abstract: In a two-dimensional XY ferromagnet the dipole force induces a strong interaction between spin waves in the long-wavelength limit. The major effect of this interaction is the transformation of a propagating spin wave into a diffusion mode. We study the anomalous dynamics of such diffusion modes. We find that the Janssen-De Dominics functional, which governs this dynamics, approaches the non-Gaussian fixed point. A spin wave propagates by an anomalous anisotropic diffusion with the dispersion relation: i omega similar to k(y)(Delta y) and i omega similar to k(x)(Delta x), where Delta(y)=47/27 and Delta(x)=47/36. The low-frequency response to the external magnetic field is found.

Abstract: An investigation was conducted on compact, multichannel GPS (global positioning system) receivers. The code generator and correlation equipment were simplified, attempting to avoid downgrading the properties possessed by multichannel receivers as much as possible, and the error-increasing factors caused by such modification were examined. As a means of simplifying the receiver hardware, phases with a unit of 1/8 chip were established in the code generator. Each channel was provided with a circuit for determining correlation, and the phase differences of the carrier and the code were measured by time division. It was confirmed that sufficient accuracy of measurement can be obtained even if such simplification is carried out.
