Abstract: The Q(EC) values of the superallowed beta(+) emitters (10)C, (34)Ar, (38)Ca, and (46)V have been measured with the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap mass spectrometer to be 3648.12(8), 6061.83(8), 6612.12(7), and 7052.44(10) keV, respectively. All four values are substantially improved in precision over previous results. Of the well-known superallowed emitters, only (14)O has yet to have had its Q(EC) value measured with a Penning trap.

Abstract: The diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm with and without importance sampling is analyzed in terms of the algorithm's underlying transfer matrix. The crucial role played by the Langevin algorithm in the importance-sampling process is made explicit and emphasized. The failure of existing second-order algorithms to converge quadratically for atomic many-body problems is shown to be caused by nonperturbative convergence errors due to the intrinsic inability of the Langevin algorithm to sample Slater orbitals. This failure can be simply circumvented by enforcing attractive cusp conditions on the trial function. Various new second-order diffusion Monte Carlo algorithms are systematically derived and their quadratic convergence numerically verified in cases of He and H2.

Abstract: Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) have been occurring at an accelerated pace in northern parts of China. These changes are significantly impacting the hydrology of these parts, such as Laohahe Catchment. The hydrological effects of these changes occurring in this catchment were investigated using a semi-distributed hydrological model. The semi-distributed hydrological model was coupled with a two-source potential evaportranspiration (PET) model for simulating daily runoff. Model parameters were calibrated using hydrometeorological and LULC data for the same period. The LULC data were available for 1980, 1989, 1996 and 1999. Daily streamflow measurements were available from 1964 to 2005 and were divided into 4 periods: 1964–1979, 1980–1989, 1990–1999 and 2000–2005. These periods represented four different LULC scenarios. Streamflow simulation was conducted for each period under these four LULC scenarios. The results showed that the change in LULC influenced evapotranspiration (ET) and runoff. The LULC data showed that from 1980 to 1996 grass land and water body had decreased and forest land and crop land had increased. This change caused the evaporation from vegetation interception and vegetation transpiration to increase, whereas the soil evaporation tended to decrease. Thus during the period of 1964–1979 the green water or ET increased by 0.95%, but the blue water or runoff decreased by 8.71% in the Laohahe Catchment.

Abstract: We propose an experimental scheme to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect in an anisotropic square optical lattice which can be generated from available experimental setups of double-well lattices with minor modifications. A periodic gauge potential induced by atom-light interaction is introduced to give a Peierls phase for the nearest-neighbor site hopping. The quantized anomalous Hall conductivity is investigated by calculating the Chern number as well as the chiral gapless edge states of our system. Furthermore, we show in detail the feasability for its experimental detection through light Bragg scattering of the edge and bulk states with which one can determine the topological phase transition from usual insulating phase to quantum anomalous Hall phase.

Abstract: We consider a quantum beat laser [Scully and Zubairy, Phys. Rev. A 35 752 (1987)] as a source of entangled radiation. The system essentially consists of three-level atoms inside a doubly resonant cavity such that coherence is introduced by driving the upper two levels with a strong classical field of Rabi frequency Omega. We study the dynamics of this system for different values of Rabi frequencies in the presence of cavity losses. It is shown that entanglement can be generated in this system for different initial states of the field in the two modes.

Abstract: We consider a gedanken experiment with a beam of atoms in their ground state that are accelerated through a single-mode cavity. We show that taking into account of the "counterrotating" terms in the interaction Hamiltonian leads to the excitation of an atom with simultaneous emission of a photon into a field mode. In free space, when the atom-field interaction is turning on/off adiabatically, the only nonadiabatic effect that causes the excitation is the time-dependent Doppler shift. The resulting ratio of emission and absorption probabilities is exponentially small and is described by the Unruh factor. In the opposite case of rapid turn on of the interaction on the cavity boundaries the above ratio is much greater and radiation is produced with an intensity which can exceed the intensity of radiation in free space by many orders of magnitude. In both cases real photons are produced. The cavity field at steady state has a thermal density matrix. However, under some conditions laser gain is possible. We present a detailed discussion of how the acceleration of atoms affects the generated cavity field in different situations. We identify a common physical mechanism behind the Unruh effect and similar QED radiation processes.

Abstract: Based on our previous scheme [Hemmer , Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 163603 (2006)] we show the procedures to obtain any one- or two-dimensional pattern by multiple exposures. A key modification to the resonance condition is made to achieve subwavelength pattern resolution. The level separation of the substrate does not pose an upper limit to the frequency summation. So the fundamental frequency can be high and the number of Fourier terms can be large, making our scheme very suitable for subwavelength arbitrary patterns.

Abstract: Quantum computers can, in principle, exceed the speed of ordinary computers by taking advantage of quantum coherence and entanglement. It is possible to find a "needle in a haystack" of N-1 straws in only rootN searches by utilizing coherent superposition states. In the present paper we show how modem quantum optics may provide a simple and practicable quantum search procedure, which may also yield insights into quantum search algorithms in general.

Abstract: We propose a scheme for the measurement of a two-mode entangled field-state in a high-Q cavity. The scheme utilizes the momentum distribution spectrum in the Raman-Nath regime of a three-level atom in V configuration. Due to the two modes of the electromagnetic field the atom may have x interactions with mode A, and y interactions with mode B, causing a complex momentum distribution. The momentum distribution of the atom after interaction with the quantized cavity fields contains the information of the field photon statistics. We reconstruct the joint photon statistics of the entangled field with the help of recorded momentum spectrum. We also propose to reconstruct the Wigner function of a two-mode entangled field state by injecting two coherent states resonant to each mode into the cavity and then measuring the joint photon statistics of the displaced field.

Abstract: Phase-sensitive amplification in a three-level atomic system exhibits interesting features. For example, in the zero-detuning limit and for sufficiently strong driving field, this system becomes an ideal parametric amplifier, whereas, for a weak driving field it is a phase-insensitive amplifier [Ansari et al., Phys. Rev. A 41, 5179 ( 1990)]. In this paper, we show that this system could be used to measure the quantum state of the radiation field inside a cavity. To reconstruct the quantum state, we amplify it through a three-level atomic system and in the parametric limit, when noise in both the quadratures approaches to zero measure the amplified field quadrature, The complete quadrature distribution is obtained by measuring the quadratures for different values of the driving field phases. The inverse Radon transformation is then employed to reconstruct the original quantum state. Our scheme is insensitive to the problems associated with nonunit detector efficiency in homodyne detection measurement.

Abstract: We propose a scheme for teleporting an arbitrary superposition of entangled Dicke states of any number of atoms (qubits) between two distant cavities. Our method relies on adiabatic passage using multi-atom dark states in each cavity, and a conditional detection of photons leaking out of both cavities. The ideal success probability of the protocol decreases polynomially in the number of atoms. The fidelity is unity for a single Dicke state, and can be optimized for the superposition by unitary postprocessing. Issues of experimental feasibility and applications to quantum informatics are discussed.

Abstract: A protocol for the teleportation of arbitrary quantum states of four-dimensional qudits is presented. The qudit to be teleported is encoded in the combined state of two ensembles of atoms placed in a cavity at the sender's side. The receiver uses a similar setup, with his atoms prepared in a particular initial state. The teleportation protocol then consists of adiabatic mapping of the ensemble states onto photonic degrees of freedom, which are then directed onto a specific beam splitter and detection setup. For part of the measurement outcome, the qudit state is fully transferred to the receiver. Other detection events lead to partial teleportation or failed teleportation attempts. The interpretation of the different detection outcomes and possible ways of improving the full teleportation probability are discussed.

Abstract: We study the amplification of a resonant standing-wave light field due to the interaction with a beam of monovelocity two-level atoms moving in the Raman-Nath regime and in the Bragg regime. The atomic density is low so that, at most, one atom is inside the cavity at a time. This system is very similar to the well-known micromaser but it is operating in the optical region of the field frequencies. Therefore, the situation corresponds to a microlaser, Unlike the micromaser system, the momentum transfer between the atoms and photons in the microlaser essentially effects the center-of-mass motion of the atoms and the evolution of the field.

Abstract: A thermodynamic T-matrix approach for elastic two-body interactions is employed to calculate spectral functions of open and hidden heavy-quark systems in the quark-gluon plasma. This enables the evaluation of quarkonium bound-state properties and heavy-quark diffusion on a common basis and thus to obtain mutual constraints. The two-body interaction kernel is approximated within a potential picture for spacelike momentum transfers. An effective field-theoretical model combining color-Coulomb and confining terms is implemented with relativistic corrections and for different color channels. Four pertinent model parameters, characterizing the coupling strengths and screening, are adjusted to reproduce the color-average heavy-quark free energy as computed in thermal lattice QCD. The approach is tested against vacuum spectroscopy in the open (D, B) and hidden (Psi and Gamma) flavor sectors, as well as in the high-energy limit of elastic perturbative QCD scattering. Theoretical uncertainties in the static reduction scheme of the four-dimensional Bethe-Salpeter equation are elucidated. The quarkonium spectral functions are used to calculate Euclidean correlators which are discussed in light of lattice QCD results, while heavy-quark relaxation rates and diffusion coefficients are extracted utilizing a Fokker-Planck equation.
